　　有一天，更羸和魏王站在一個(gè)高臺(tái)上，仰頭看見有鳥在天空中飛。

　　更羸對(duì)魏王說："請(qǐng)大王看看，我可以只拉弓不發(fā)箭而把鳥射下來。"

　　魏王不相信地說："難道你的射術(shù)可以達(dá)到這樣的水平嗎?"

　　更羸很自信地說："可以。"

　　過了一小會(huì)兒，一只雁從東方飛來，更羸拿起弓拉了一下空弦，那只雁就一下子栽落到地上。

　　魏王驚嘆說："射箭的本領(lǐng)居然可以達(dá)到這樣一種地步!"

　　更羸說："這是一只受傷的狐雁啊!"

　　魏王說："先生是怎么知道的呢?"

　　更羸回答說："它飛得很緩慢，叫聲很悲慘。飛得慢，是因?yàn)榕f傷疼痛;叫得慘，是因?yàn)殚L久失群。由于它的舊傷沒有長好而害怕的心情又沒有去掉，所以一聽見弓弦響，就急忙往高處飛，這就引起傷口破裂，從高空掉下來了。"

　　小故事大道理：比喻經(jīng)過驚嚇的人碰到一點(diǎn)動(dòng)靜就非常害怕。

　　原文：

　　異日者，更羸與魏王處京臺(tái)之下，仰見飛鳥。更羸謂魏王曰："臣為王引弓虛發(fā)而下鳥。"魏王曰："然則射可至此乎?"更羸曰："可。"有間，雁從東方來，更羸以虛發(fā)而下之。魏王曰："然則射可至此乎?"更羸曰："此孽也。"王曰："先生何以知之?"對(duì)曰："其飛徐而鳴悲。飛徐者，故瘡?fù)匆?鳴悲者，久失群也，故瘡未息而驚心未去也，聞弦音引而高飛，故瘡隕也。"

　　There was an archer named Geng Ying in the State of Wei. He went sightseeing with the King of Wei at Jingtai. At that time a bird was circling around in the sky, uttering sad and shrill cries now and then. The King of Wei looked up at it for a while and said to Geng Ying: "Do you see that bird? Can you shoot it down?"

　　"I can shoot it down without using an arrow," Geng Ying said.

　　After a while, the bird flew near. Geng Ying pulled his bow to the full, plucked the bowstring, and at the sound the bird fell to the ground before their feet.

　　The King of Wei said in surprise: "You can shoot down a bird without an arrow. Your skill in archery is really wonderful."

　　Geng Ying said: "Your Majesty, this is not due to my good skill, but because this is a bird of bad luck. You can hear how sadly and shrilly it wailed, and see how tiredly it flew. It was already wounded, and for a long time could not find its companion. Therefore it couldnt stand the least fright. As soon as I twanged my bow, it thought it had been shot and fell down of its own accord from the sky. What a pitiful bird frightened by the mere twang of a bowstring!"
